Collection 1

Alicia Davies from Orpington in Kent

Alicia has very kindly allowed us to take a peek at her wonderful collection of old houses and miniatures.

Alicia says " Some items are actually modern. I tend to put in what I want, basically whatever takes my fancy. That way it's not so expensive to fill them as you can always replace new for old if the opportunity comes along at the right price."

(A very good tip!)

KT Miniatures would like to thank Alicia for sharing her collection with us and feel sure that anyone with a passion for these old houses will be fascinated.

No.38 G & J Lines house with garage fixed on the side, circa late 1920s to 1932.

This is mainly furnished with Dol-toi, Barton, Grecon Dolls etc. It is a little chaotic inside at the moment, and I am trying to decide what has to go and what to keep!

Note from Marion Osborne: This model was made from the late 1920s up to 1932 when Joseph Lines died and G&J Lines ceased production.

German Shop

Bought at a fair last year. Manufacturer unknown.

Lines No.10 Dolls House circa approx.1906

This is my favourite house from my entire collection. The contents came mainly from a large old Tri-ang No. 12 dolls house. If you look at the bottom right hand room you will see a Dolls House Emporium man, also the sideboard, table and chairs are modern- just covered up by a little lace cloth from a charity shop!

Note from Marion Osborne: The No.10 could be from about 1898 -1912 approx. The flat roofed box houses came first and were available before 1902. The problem is that two or more catalogues could be identical such as the 1902 and 1903 catalogues,  also the 1909 and 1910 catalogues. They didn't change the artwork as it was expensive, so catalogues are not as helpful as they could be!

There are several queries over this house, for instance the No.12 shown in a 1909 catalogue has a square looking balcony, unlike this house with a rounded balcony. The No.13 and No.14 have the same porch as this and all of the houses mentioned above, were introduced about 1902-1903. The metal fireplaces are mentioned in the Gammages 1906 listing, so I am assuming that Alicia's house is pre 1909 because it is probable that by then the wooden fireplaces were used in all.

G&J Lines "B" Dolls House circa 1920s

This is a small house. Upstairs is furnished with a Barton Tudor dressing table and wardrobe. Downstairs is mainly German furniture. The house was bought off an internet website.

Note from Marion Osborne: This house was first introduced about 1913 and still available in 1928. I would suggest Alicia's house is from the 1920s because of the rounded back fireplace.  Photos of an earlier version of this house, perhaps 1913-1915, shows the windows being a putty coloured background with flowers and leaves painted on them, presumably when WW1 with shortages of materials and manpower started to bite.  The windows were painted deep brown and remained that colour.

Handmade Dolls House circa approx.1920s

Top right: The massive old bed is made of silk but sadly has deteriorated, plus some old German Furniture.

Top Left: Some items are modern such as the bed but the dressing table and wardrobe are old.

Bottom Left: Two modern "Steptoe & Son" dolls by Gill Cauldwell. Also an old Tri-ang dresser & kitchen range, with some modern furntiture.

Bottom Right: A 1920/30s Bentwood table and chairs, plus more old German furniture. There are some modern items of furniture on the inner wall.

Bliss Keyhole Dolls House circa 1909

I bought this house about five years ago from a lady I never did meet, but sold her two of my own houses in return, all by telephone!

Tri-ang Stockbroker Dolls House circa 1950s

The outside is believed to be original but I repapered the inside as by the time I took posession of it, someone had totally emulsioned the interior. The house is approx. 4ft wide so quite large.

Kitchen: Tri-ang kitchen range, Tri-ang dresser and another dresser thought to be German. The doll is a china headed one. The green dresser is modern.

Top Left Bedroom: Barton Tudor bed, the other furniture is possibly German (unsure). The fireplace is Tri-ang. There is a lovely German tin crystal radio set.

Top Right Bedroom: Again Barton Tudor furniture.

Bottom Right Downstairs: Barton table and chairs, dresser and Tudor Cupboard. A china head doll and two German dolls.

The Following Two Houses Are Modern But Filled With A Mixture Of Old & New Items

It was made by Steve Hilbert originally for my friend, who then had to move house and due to lack of space, kept just the basic house but sold the two extensions to me. So what you see are the two extensions pushed together.

Photo a: Top left room is all Japanese & Chinese items, some from charity shops and all relatively modern. Middle left, a snooker table by Dough Woodyard, again modern.

Photos b,c & d: Many items in all of these three rooms are plastic from the 1960s Petite Princess range, beautifully made and some are hand painted. In photo c: I am waiting to find out if some furniture is German Spielwaren. All other furniture is modern and painted gold. In photo d: Mac the gardener can be seen at the foot of the stairs, he has fallend down!

The other dolls are Scarlett O'Hara and Red Butler, who fell over just as his photo was being taken (can't see him but he should be in photo c)!

The Bookcellar By George Parker

This is a modern built house however amongst the furnishings you will notice some very old pieces.

The bottom floor has modern wall units, some books made by me and an old Japanese bamboo cane furniture set. The middle floor has an old German Piano (may be Gottschalk, not sure), the rest mostly modern.

Top left bedroom has an old German Suite, again possibly Gottschalk (not sure).

Lines No.31 circa 1909

This is a Lines No.31 measuring approx. 33 inches high, 24 1/2 inches wide and 18 inches deep. The fireplaces were taken from Lines No.32 that I sold. As you can see its been totally repapered on the inside walls with lovely antique wallpaper from KT Miniatures, the floors are original though.

The brick paper on the outside is original but the roof is a replacement paper and the front has been repainted.

Lines No.35 circa 1915

This is a Lines No 35, measuring 20" high x 19" wide x 11" deep. The house has its original decoration on the outside but most rooms apart from the bottom left, have again been repapered with antique wallpaper from KT Miniatures.

There is some Barton Tudor furniture in the house.
